Daniel Boone famously said, “Heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place.” Hundreds of years later, Kentucky is still stunningly beautiful, whether you’re in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, the rolling bluegrass of Central Kentucky or really anywhere in the state, you’ll find nature showing off.
We’re particularly proud of our lakes here. I grew up near Lake Cumberland, where my grandpa, dad and uncles fished (my uncle Jim still holds the state record for rainbow trout) and my mom would take us kids to swim on hot summer days before they built the pool at Burnside Island State Park.
Lake Cumberland is a man-made lake, created in part by flooding the original town of Burnside (it’s still down there), but that doesn’t take away from its beauty. In the summer, the lake is dotted with magnificent houseboats (you can even rent a houseboat), sleek ski boats, pontoons. At 101 miles long, with 1,255 miles of shoreline and over 66,000 acres, there’s room for everyone. Learn more about Lake Cumberland.
