Cathy Mattingly is a full-time REALTOR, part-time writer, and licensed-nonpracticing attorney. A proud native Kentuckian, Cathy most recently moved to this area area from Arlington, Virginia when she married long-time Georgetown resident Ben Richardson, a Kentucky National Guard officer who had been stationed at the National Guard Bureau. .
Cathy is originally from Somerset, Kentucky, near Lake Cumberland, and graduated from Centre College in Danville and the University of Louisville law school. She has also lived in Lexington, Louisville and Northern Kentucky, as well as Dayton, Ohio, Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland.
Cathy and Ben recently moved to a house Cathy designed in Stamping Ground, a beautiful rural community in Scott County, Kentucky, adjacent to Georgetown and Frankfort, where they live with their yellow lab mix Sunny and German shorthaired pointer Sterling. They are slightly obsessed with taking pictures of the sunsets from their back porch and love having people over to visit. In addition to spending time with family and friends, Cathy is passionate about houses, horses, music and entertaining.
Cathy considers herself fortunate to have traveled all over the world, but Ben jokes that, since they got the horses, he can’t get her out of the barn! Ben and Cathy got involved in horse racing a few years ago and belong to a partnership called Buena Vista Racing. They’ve raced two thoroughbred geldings – Cat’s in the Mood and Warrior’s Passion who are both retired – and have two fillies in training at West Thoroughbreds. Their mare Shenandoah Soaring (nicknamed Sunny) is due to foal March, and that filly will be the first horse Ben and Cathy have had a part of breeding. Cathy got her very first horse last year, a young Tennessee Walking Horse gelding named Beckham, and she and Ben have been taking riding and horsemanship lessons with Todd Slusher of Three Hill Farm in Stamping Ground. They also got a mini horse named Sugar late last year as a gift for the grandkids. Sunny the horse, Beckham and Sugar are boarded at Elkhorn Springs Farm in Stamping Ground.
Cathy says she is happy to be back in Kentucky and loves Scott County more than she ever could have imagined, coming from such a large metropolitan area. Having found her little bit of heaven, she loves to help other people find their perfect place at home in the Bluegrass. She especially enjoys working with folks who love animals and care about other people, beyond their own families and immediate circle of friends. When asked to sum up her approach to real estate (and life), Cathy quoted C.S. Lewis,
“[Always] do the right thing, even when no one is watching.”
