Derby Day is always a big day in Kentucky, and this year’s race was one to remember. After a brunch with family celebrating my nephew’s graduation from the University of Kentucky, my husband Ben Richardson (aka George Strait) and I joined Kristine Cassata and David Frost and friends for a spectacular Derby party at their home in Georgetown, complete with party tent, great food and fun drinks. And watching the horse race, of course.
What a race it was! Rich Strike, an 80-1 shot, came from way behind to win the Kentucky Derby in an absolutely thrilling run for the roses. Seeing this former claiming horse (the first claimer to ever win the Kentucky Derby), who had only won 1 of his 7 previous starts, owned by a first-time Derby owner, trained by a first-time Derby trainer, ridden by a first-time Derby jockey gave hope to small racing operations everywhere that “maybe, maybe someday that could be us.”
